Hardware Integration

Any device, into any software

Software that has to talk to physical hardware is a different discipline from software that does not. Timing, drivers, protocols, failure modes and the fact that a device does not behave the way its manual says are all normal. S-Tech has been doing this since it started, and it is the reason our software works on a shop floor and not just in a demo.

What we build

Scope of this service

RFID hardware of any make

Readers, antennas, gates and handhelds from any manufacturer, integrated at the protocol level so you are never locked to one vendor.

Biometric and access devices

Fingerprint, face and palm terminals, door controllers, turnstiles and boom barriers, over SDK, Wiegand or OSDP.

Weighing scales and instruments

Industrial and laboratory scales, dimensioners and measurement instruments over serial, USB and network.

Laboratory analyzers

Biochemistry, haematology and immunoassay analyzers over ASTM, HL7 and serial, in both directions.

Printers and label applicators

RFID and barcode printers, card printers and print-and-apply systems, with encoding and write verification.

PLCs and industrial controllers

Modbus TCP, Profinet and EtherNet/IP integration so a read can gate a machine directly, not via a server.

Cameras and ANPR

CCTV, number plate recognition and photo capture triggered by an event and stored against the record.

Sensors and IoT

Temperature, humidity, door and vibration sensors feeding alerts and compliance logs.

Our process

How a project runs

Five stages, in this order. The first one removes most of the risk and is the one clients are most tempted to skip.

  1. 1

    Device audit

We list every make and model in scope and confirm what interface each one actually exposes. Half of the surprises in this kind of project are found here.

  2. 2

    Protocol proving

A small test harness talks to one unit of each device before anything is built around it. If a device cannot do what its brochure claims, we find out now.

  3. 3

    Driver layer

A driver per device, with a common interface above it, so a replacement device later means one new driver rather than a rewrite.

  4. 4

    Failure handling

Reconnection, buffering, duplicate suppression and clear alerting, because devices disconnect and that must not lose data.

  5. 5

    Site commissioning

Installed, tuned and proven on your site with your goods, with the read rates and test results documented.

Examples

Work of this kind we have delivered

Described by what was built rather than by client name, until we have permission to publish.

Multi-vendor RFID estate

A single deployment reading from four different reader manufacturers through one driver layer, so the client buys on price rather than on lock-in.

Analyzer bench

Six laboratory analyzers connected two-way into one results pipeline, removing manual result entry.

Gate and barrier control

Long-range readers driving boom barriers with loop detectors and ANPR cameras, holding rules locally so the gate works when the network does not.

Production line PLC gating

Station readers wired into PLCs so the machine refuses to run on the wrong part, with the decision made in milliseconds at the station.

Engagement models

How we can work together

Which one fits depends mostly on how settled the requirement is, and how much you want to steer week to week.

Integration project

A defined set of devices integrated into your existing software, fixed scope and price.

Driver development

We build a driver for one device against your interface, and you own it.

Supply and integrate

We supply the hardware and integrate it, so there is one supplier and no argument about whose fault a fault is.

Questions

Common questions

Can you integrate a device we already own?

Usually. Tell us the exact make and model and we will check what interface it exposes. If it has no usable interface we will say so rather than take the project and struggle.

Will this work with our existing software, not yours?

Yes. We build the driver and the interface to whatever system you already run, and hand it over with documentation.

What read rate can you commit to?

We commit after a site trial, not before. Once we have tested tags and antenna placement against your actual goods we document a rate and stand behind it.

Tell us about your hardware integration project

Send the problem rather than a specification. We will come back with an approach, an engagement model, and an honest view of whether an existing product would be cheaper.

We reply within one working day.

Tell us what you need to track

Send us the problem and we will come back with a specification — the software, the hardware, and a read-rate trial on your own goods before you order anything.
